armistice

Today - at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year - marks the 90th anniversary of Armistice Day.  Commemorating the end of the “war to end all wars”.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Laurence Binyon - For the Fallen

Lest we forget.

what do you say?

I’ve fielded a couple of calls in the last day or so from people wanting to bring their own paintballs to use on the field in general bookings.

They all seem a bit put out that we don’t allow it (we are Field Paint Only) in general bookings - but you can come along to our open days and bring your own if you fancy.

I mean c’mon … you don’t take you own food to a restaurant do you?

Back in the day Budweiser did a series of clever adverts - which quickly went viral and around the world.

Now the guys from those ads have done one for the Obama Presidential campaign.  Very clever and worth a watch.

Hat tip to Pete for the vid …

doing something right

Must be doing something right.

We had a kids birthday booking through TAG last weekend - and last night I had a call from the mother booking in the kids entire class for an end of year school thing.

And it was all down to the excellent experience that they said they had on the weekend.

Maybe this will work out afterall :)

accounting

Knowledge of your proposed business is one thing, but admiting where you don’t have knowledge is probably more important in terms of success in a SMB.

One area that Tania and I have no expertise is around accounting … not something we’ve had to worry about.  We’ve been lucky in terms of retaining Mike at Matrix Business Development as our accountant (so far, so good) - but a key thing for us to look at was around accounting software.

Now there are the usual suspects that people tend to recognise, but we wanted something that we could use anywhere, was simple, had good reporting, our accountant could access online (without the need to send files to him).

Step into the gap - Xero.  It’s on a SaaS engine, with a simple interface that caters to all users (complete newbs like us - to power users & accountants).  Can’t speak enough how happy we are to be using it.  I’ve been watching Xero for a while - and decided to trial once we bought TAG, and were more than happy to signup full time.

I’d recomend it to anyone starting a SMB (or other business) … and they can service New Zealand, Australia & the UK now!

We had Coles birthday party today - and went to Laser Strike with a few of his friends.

As a responsible adult I (of course) had to go into the maze with them to make sure that everyone had fun … Cole & Cameron were on fire (I take credit for that).

Basically we had a blast … it’s a whole new feeling when you’re doing something like that with your own kids :)
